Evaluating Advertising: A Compare/Contrast Activity for Middle Grade Readers
Books that are fortunate to have enjoyed a long life are sometimes treated to a “freshening up” process and repackaged to feature new covers—presumably with the hope of better attracting a new generation of readers. Comparing and contrasting these cover treatments is a great way to engage middle grade readers in discussions about how to think critically about advertising and marketing. These two sets of images present a chance to allow your students to compare/contrast different covers for two of my novels, On My Honor and Shelter from the Wind, but you may also find other titles with multiple covers in your school library (for example, the hardcover and paperback editions of the same title sometimes feature different looks).
