Help Kids Celebrate Differences

My picture book A Mama for Owen is based on a true story, and at its heart, it’s a celebration of the fact that two very different creatures—a baby hippo and a giant tortoise—are able to form a close and loving bond. My hope is that we can all find ways to help children get beyond the divisiveness so often found in today’s world and form unexpected friendships like that of Owen and Mzee. This ParentsTogether article, titled “5 Tips To Teach Kids To Connect With People Different Than They Are,” might be a good place to start if you’re looking for ideas for how to bring that about.
