Judging a Book by Its Cover
My title On My Honor has fortunately been enough in demand over the years that the cover design has been updated and refreshed many times. It’s fascinating to look back over the wide variety of approaches that designers have taken to creating the different covers. The old saying tells us we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but of course, that’s exactly what publishers are hoping we’ll do when they present each new cover design. As with any kind of comparison, I find I prefer some of the covers over others for artistic reasons, and some seem (to me) to do a better job of conveying the essence of the story. It’s more critical today than ever that young readers develop their decoding skills by learning how to interpret and analyze the images they’re presented via advertising and the media. So why not try a simple activity? Present your students with these different covers designs for the same book title and then ask them to share their predictions about the story based on the different images. What do they think—can we fairly judge a book by its cover? Just how correct were their judgments?
