The History of Memorial Day

Harriet TubmanAn interesting article in Time notes that “Yale University historian David Blight places the first Memorial Day in April 1865, when a group of former slaves gathered at a Charleston, S.C., horse track turned Confederate prison where more than 250 Union soldiers had died.”In anticipation of Memorial Day, why not pair this interesting historical note with a book such as my title Harriet Tubman from the My First Biography series—one that explores the life of a woman who escaped slavery to become a great humanitarian?
